Taking out an old fence is heavier work than it looks. Every post is usually sitting in a lump of concrete, the boards are full of nails, and the whole lot has to leave the property. We pull the fence, the posts and the footings, fill the holes, and haul it away.
Most removals happen as the first day of a fence replacement, but we also remove fences on their own — before landscaping, a sale, a new retaining wall, or when a neighbor’s old fence has finally come down.

What Removal Includes
Boards, panels and rails
Taken down in sections and stacked for loading, with nails and hardware kept out of your lawn.
Posts and concrete footings
Posts come out with their concrete. Leaving footings in the ground is what stops a new post from going in the same place — or a garden bed from ever growing there.
Holes filled, site cleared
Post holes backfilled and tamped, and the fence line raked clear of debris.
Haul-away and disposal
Everything leaves the property. Chain link and other metal can be recycled as scrap; disposal is part of the removal line on the estimate.

Whose fence is it?
A fence on or near the property line may belong to your neighbor, or to both of you. Removing it without agreement is how neighbor disputes start. See the guide to boundary fences in Washington.
Utilities under the footings
Pulling concrete footings disturbs the ground, and new holes will be dug for any replacement. Utilities are located through 811 before that work begins.
Plants, sprinklers and walls
Tell us about irrigation lines, planting you want kept, and retaining walls or rockeries the fence ties into, so the removal plan works around them.

With a new fence
When we remove the old fence and build the new one, removal and haul-away is about $15 a foot. The cost calculator includes it as an option.
On its own
Stand-alone removal is estimated from photos or a short visit, because it depends on the footage, the material, how much concrete is in the ground and how far debris has to be carried.
What changes the price
Heavy concrete footings, chain link with buried bottom wire, masonry pillars, steep or tight access, and fences overgrown with ivy or blackberry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the new fence use the old post holes?
Rarely. The old holes are full of broken concrete and loose soil, and a new layout seldom puts posts in exactly the same spots. New holes give new posts solid ground.
Can I keep part of the old fence?
Yes — for example, a sound section along one side while the rest is replaced. We will check that the section being kept is worth keeping.
Do you remove chain link and wire fences?
Yes, including chain link with barbed wire, old field fence and wire mesh.
